Seeing Lucky & Changing From Got to Get
“The Americans complain. And the Chinese take even more photos,” said Luh, our spiritual expedition leader in Ubud.
She broke into the most contagious giggle before continuing, “I like to show people the customs and traditions of my people. Show the Bali way. Maybe they’ll learn something. Ya know in Bali, we always see the lucky side. If my motorbike breaks down today, that’s okay, I get to spend more time with my family. Maybe lucky because I’m not able to wreck it. I’m not married yet. But, I’m lucky because I’m able to focus on my business. Maybe my business will bring me a westerner who admires it. We see lucky.”
In the midst of mimicking her radiant Balinese smile, the comment about Americans resonated with me and forced me to pause. Even while getting ready for this amazing spiritual cleansing, I caught myself complaining about the early wake up time. (Seriously?!)
I’m dedicated to changing my list of “got to do’s” to “get to do’s” and seeing the lucky side of life. Life is magical – we should treat it that way! This simple trick transformed my outlook and mindset. I’ve noticed that once I find more pleasure, even in the more mundane tasks, and note the things I’m grateful for, the joy and gratitude multiplies.
And while the idea isn’t new, Luh drove it home for me.
