“Don’t forget your compression socks.”

This text exchange warms my heart.

Several months ago, I asked my mom if she’d be interested in a girls trip to Bali with a girlfriend and her mom to celebrate my 30th birthday.

“Sure, sounds like fun.”

I re-read her response a couple times. I thought it’d take quite a bit more convincing since this will be her first time leaving the country.

Since then, her preparation messages have sprinkled my days with delight.
“The monkeys might snatch our sunglasses. May not need to wear them there.”“We need to arrange transportation. I’ve read they’ll just try to pick up your suitcase!”Watch this video – it’s amazing what he fits in a carry-on.”
“Did you get travel insurance?”
“How long is the flight again..?”

It’s evolved into a beautiful role reversal in which I’m now the one guiding and showing the way. (I guess after *almost* 30 years, the woman does deserve a break.)

I hope this trip expands the belief in herself by widening her horizon and opening her scope of possibility. I also hope to remain patient and respectful of boundaries while offering the support she needs to move past fear.

As excited as I am for this experience, I know my greatest joy will be seeing that curious light spread across her face as she discovers one of travel’s newfound wonders.
